National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
October 26, 2019
DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is right around the corner on Saturday, October 26th from 10am to 2pm, so save the date and mark your calendar!
DFC coalitions have repeatedly shown that preventing drug use before it begins, particularly among young people, is the most cost effective way to reduce drug use and its consequences.
In fact, according to the 2018 DFC National Evaluation End-of-Year Report, almost all DFC coalitions (96%) reported having a prescription take back program or event in their communities. Take Back Day events provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing unused or expired prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
The DEA reports that during the last Take Back Day in April they collected 468 tons of unused or expired prescription medication. This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the fall of 2010 to 11,816,393 pounds.
